Awareness of Bandwidth calculation logic

Most of the internet service provider promising about the speed of download/surfing. All talking in terms of kbps, mbps etc. End users many times complaining about the speed. They raising queries like the speed is not as Internet Service Provider promised us. We are getting speed is about 32 KBPS and Internet Service Provider promised me 256 Kbps. ISP faces this type of complains often.

In above example, ISP is right. Before calculating the speed of the internet, you needs to consider the terminology  with numbers as written below;

8 bits = 1 byte
1024 bytes = 1 KB
1024 KB = 1 MB
1024 MB = 1 GB and so on... if you wants to know more, visit below said link

File size calculation table

Now Back to example stated above - ISP told user to get speed 256 Kbps & user checked that actually s/he is getting speed is less than 256 KBPS. According to ISP, it is provided that bandwidth of 256kbps (note the small "b" in kbps). That means user will get the speed around 32KBps (Its capital "B" in KBps). From the above table, you can calculate this numbers as 256/8=32. So, 256kbps which is equivalent to 32KBps. That means, ISP is right and due to lack of awareness user has reaised the query.
